3-week Introduction to Commercial Fishing

Our three-week Introduction to Commercial Fishing (ICF) course is designed for individuals interested in starting a career in the fishing industry.

Course content

Over a three week period the course gives new entrants a basic knowledge and awareness of different activities that are commonplace aboard commercial fishing vessels.

Four one-day courses on sea survival, health and safety, first aid and firefighting – which are a legal requirement for any new fishermen entering the industry – are included as part of the syllabus.

Anyone interested in completing this course should contact an Approved Training Provider for further details and to book a place. Note: some providers also offer a 3-day taster version of this course.

"Having the knowledge and understanding gained on the course gave me the confidence I needed to take that first step onto a vessel."
Michael Mitchell, now skipper who did the course in 2016

Once you have completed the ICF course you can receive an ICF New Entrants Card which lists on the back the four basic mandatory courses along with the other units completed. You can then find details of vessels or skippers looking for crew on ukfishingjobs.org  or findafishingboat.com.

Where funding is available the Introduction to Commercial Fishing course can be delivered free-of-charge to trainees.
