Seafish has a long history of supporting UK gear trials aimed at improving the environmental and operational performance of commercial fisheries. The recent FloMo trial in the western Irish Sea illustrates the importance of generating robust, real-world evidence when assessing innovative approaches to selectivity (bycatch reduction.) Experience consistently shows that technical performance alone does not determine success. Operational compatibility, vessel configuration, crew practices and economic viability are all critical factors in whether new technology can be adopted at scale. As the first trial of the meshless FloMo device in the UK, this work provides important insight for the sector. The next step is to understand how such technologies perform across a wider range of fisheries, vessel types and commercial contexts. Only through comparative, evidence-based evaluation can informed decisions be made about their broader application for the UK fleet.
