Fair Trade USA, a non-profit organisation, is the leading third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States.

Launched in 2014 Fair Trade USA is a third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States. They audit and certify transactions between US companies and their international suppliers focusing on social empowerment, environmental sustainability, and economic development. In 2014, Fair Trade USA launched its Capture Fisheries Program in an effort to bring the benefits of Fair Trade to small-scale fishermen. The Capture Fisheries Standard (CFS) outlines requirements and compliance criteria for wild-caught fisheries to build strong fishing communities and healthy oceans. T

In November 2017 Fair Trade USA announced it updated Capture Fisheries Standard (CFS) version 1.1.0. The terms ‘worker’ and ‘crew member’ have been introduced to differentiate labours done at sea and on land, as well as requirements for each. The CFS version 1.1.0 went into effect on 15 January 2018. This CFS version 1.1.0 continues to be the version against which producers are certified until 31 December 2021. From January 1st, 2022, onwards, the Capture Fisheries Standard 2.0.0 becomes the official version.


Significance for seafood businesses: 

Has a specific capture fisheries programme. Sourcing seafood that is accredited to a standard that has a social component provides reassurance that the seafood you are purchasing has been independently verified concerning social issues.
