The ETI Base Code is an internationally recognised Code of Labour Practice.

The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) is a leading alliance of companies, trade unions and NGOs that promotes respect for workers’ rights around the globe.

The ETI Base Code is founded on the conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and is an internationally recognised Code of Labour Practice. There are nine criteria within their ETI Base Code. 1. Employment is freely chosen. 2. Freedom of association. 3. Working conditions are safe and hygienic. 4. Child labour shall not be used. 5. Living wages are paid. 6. Working hours are not excessive. 7. No discrimination is practiced. 8. Regular employment is provided. 9. No harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed.


Significance for seafood businesses: 

These are general principles (not seafood specific) that form a recognised Code of Labour Practice.
