    Seafish response to Consultation on a Northern Ireland Marine Bill - Policy Proposals

    The Northern Ireland Marine Bill will contain provisions for marine planning and marine nature conservation within Northern Ireland's territorial waters (within the 12 nautical mile limit). The consultation contains proposals a framework for Northern Ireland’s seas based on: a new system of marine planning that will balance conservation, energy and other resource needs; a further streamlining of marine licensing above that already provided for in the UK Act; and improved processes for marine nature conservation. Poorly implemented, government run, command and control management schemes have often failed to curb fishing effort, prevent overfishing and avoid environmental degradation. Alternative, market based approaches have shown promise and, among these, enabling informed consumer choice in seafood purchasing can generate strong motivation for improved catching and culture practices.

    Storage Trials of Controlled Atmosphere Packaged Fish Products

    During these trials fish fillets were packed in a variety of atmospheres, stored under controlled conditions, and their quality assessed at regular intervals. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies.
