Shellfish flesh waste in bait

Shell waste is a major problem with UK production of waste from calcareous shellfish (excluding Nephrops and shrimp) of around 75,000t/yr of which potentially ~20,000t is flesh. Although there are many theoretical options for the use of waste shell few are commercially viable, often due to the costs of separation and cleaning. Previous work has shown it is possible to separate the flesh from the shell and supply the ‘free of flesh shell’ for use in aggregates; however this leaves the problem of what to do with the fleshy material. The current “Proof of Concept” project has focused on the use of shellfish waste derived flesh waste in commercial bait. A comprehensive set of trials with bait sticks prepared from scallop (King & Queen), whelk, and crab waste demonstrated that the fleshy waste from shell is a suitable material for baits. Whelk and crab waste formed very good baits for lobster attraction and were comparable to standard baits for whelk attraction

Review of Fish Sustainability Information Schemes Final Report

The benefits of sustainable fisheries and the need to mitigate the environmental impacts of fishing and aquaculture are increasingly in the public consciousness. Poorly implemented, government run, command and control management schemes have often failed to curb fishing effort, prevent overfishing and avoid environmental degradation. Alternative, market based approaches have shown promise and, among these, enabling informed consumer choice in seafood purchasing can generate strong motivation for improved catching and culture practices.

SR690 Potential Implications of the Landing Obligation on onshore seafood supply chains in the UK.

The aim of the work is to analyse the impact of the landing obligation in a whole supply chain context, and from financial, legal, operational and market perspectives. This project will:- •Map the UK supply chain and identify existing and perceived issues for each sector. •Assess the impact of issues in respect of changes in policy •Discuss potential consequences for each sector; for example, changes in operational behaviour, policy issues, loss of supply or loss of market. •Identify gaps in information and suggest better use of existing information. The analyses will be mainly qualitative.

Fish Waste Production in the UK - The quantities Produced and Opportunities for Better Utilisation

The options for fish waste utilisation and disposal are becoming increasingly restricted, creating a significant problem for the UK fish industry. From capture through to processing, the industry generates a significant quantity of fish waste. This report estimates the types and quantities of fish waste generated in the different sectors, from catching to processing. It then describes many of the potentially higher value utilisation opportunities for fish waste and identifies some of those that may be most suitable for the UK industry.

The preparation of this report represents Deliverable 3 of the assignment. The structure and content of the report is based on previous agreement between the contractor and the client as presented in the inception report. The contractors seek review, comments and approval from Seafish on this interim report.
