Seafish commissioned Campden BRI to conduct a desk-based literature review to provide information on the use of polyphosphates in seafood products, notably scallops and prawns. This report provides background information on polyphosphates including what they are, their presence, composition, how they interact with the product, how they break down over time and naturally occurring levels. A review of testing methodologies is also included. -

This report was produced by tourism specialists BTS, supported by fish industry experts Poseidon Consulting. It is a market based business plan, commissioned by the Strangford Lough and Lecale Partnership (SLLP), with funding from the EU and the South East Area Fisheries Local Action Group (SEAFLAG), to provide economic benefit to the South East Area which includes the fishing ports at Portavogie, Ardglass and Kilkeel. The analysis is designed to help develop the local market for locally caught seafood and local quality agricultural produce within Area. The project examines the opportunities for food tourism in the Strangford Lough and Mourne Mountains destinations, building on the concentration of the Northern Ireland fishing industry in the area, the quality of other local food produce and the number and the quality of local eating places across the area. -
Use of discards in bait
Further to the Defra ‘Fishing for the Markets’ initiative, this study explores whether discards from English vessels not destined for human consumption can be utilised in bait in England. Analysis of current discards from the English fleet and the pot bait needs of those targeting crab and lobster showed that the bait market could potentially utilise all discards in England. Commercial sea trials tested the effectiveness of a range of discards species as bait. These identified that virtually all species currently discarded by English fishing vessels could be used as effective pot bait for crabbers. But this was not the case for lobster catches where the sea trials showed a negative impact on the catch rate compared to traditional bait. The study concludes that the use of discards as pot bait will predominantly depend on the cost as they will be competing on price with a range of existing cost-effective baits already used by the potting sector. -
Time-Temperature Studies in the Distribution of Fresh Fish in Summer
This report describes a temperature survey of fresh fish between the coastal market and the retailer. Over 5,000 temperature measurements were made during the summer months which was an unusually hot summer. These measurements highlight the problem areas in temperature control throughout the distribution chain and shows that fresh fish however good it may be at the points of landing much of it is progressively downgraded or even ruined in quality by the time it reaches the consumer. Use of waste as a biofuel and fertiliser in Orkney_C008
Shellfish processors want simple, local, cost-effective solutions for managing shellfish waste. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been identified as a potential solution for shellfish waste treatment. The process produces methane which can be used to generate energy and digestate (fertiliser) which has applications in agriculture and horticulture. Heat and Power Ltd. were part funded by Seafish to evaluate the potential of AD as a solution for Orkney based shellfish and food processors. The main aims of the project were to consider whether AD could reduce commercial waste disposal costs and establish a sustainable waste management solution for the island. It included a small-scale batch digester trial on crab shells. This report summarises AD technology, suitable food wastes in Orkney and results of a small-scale batch trial on crab processing waste.
