    A Preliminary Study of the Costs of Operating a Lobster Hatchery in Orkney and the Development of an Economic Model for Future Hatchery Programmes

    As part of the UK Lobster Stock Enhancement programme, the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish) conducted a series of juvenile lobster (Homarus gammarus) releases in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Hatchery operations and the results of the different trials have been summarised in several reports and articles (Burton 1992, Beard & Wickins 1992, Bannister et al 1994, Burton 1994, Anon 1995, Cook 1995, Burton 1999, Burton in press).

    Seafood Consumption 2017

    There are three methods available to measure and track GB seafood consumption which provide slightly different yet similar figures; whilst useful for comparison, it is considered that the Defra family food dataset, produced to robust national statistical standards with reasonable time availability is considered to be the best source for an accurate, consistent benchmark. This data shows a 2% increase in seafood consumption from 157.83 grams per person per week in 2014 to 161.07 grams per person per week in 2015.

    A key element of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), effective 1 January 2014, is the progressive elimination of discards in EU fisheries through the introduction of the new landings obligation. The landing obligation is effectively a ban on discarding fish overboard. This briefing note explains what is meant by the landing obligation and the legislative framework, and the issues it is raising for the seafood industry.

    The 2008 Economic Survey of the UK fishing fleet provides a detailed insight into the financial and operational performance of the UK fishing fleet. This report presents analysis of 33 segments of the UK fishing fleet, drawing on a combination of data collected by survey and data on landings and days at sea provided by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), which covers every active vessel in the UK fleet.
