Turbot is a fast-growing flatfish found naturally in the Northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

It is a commercially important species both for capture fisheries and aquaculture; the latter having increased rapidly in the last few years. Turbot are farmed predominantly in China, Spain and Portugal in on-shore facilities using pump ashore (PAS), or increasingly recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) technology.

Global production from aquaculture in 2016 was some 59,616 tonnes.
