New funding for fishing crew training in Scotland — Seafish

New funding for fishing crew training in Scotland

As training delivery begins to restart following Covid-19 lockdown, workers in Scotland’s commercial fishing industry have received a welcome boost.

Thanks to funding from the Scottish Government, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Trinity House, experienced fishers and new entrants will be able to apply for funding towards the cost of voluntary training.

The funding will be used to encourage experienced fishers to refresh and advance their safety knowledge and skills and undertake courses or qualifications that will help them advance their fishing careers.

New entrants will be able to apply for funding to undertake a 3-week Introduction to Commercial Fishing course that will prepare them for work in Scotland’s fishing industry.

Derek Cardno, Safety & Training Officer at the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, said:

“SFF is delighted and thank those concerned that have made it happen. SFF would encourage all fishermen in Scotland to utilise this funding to further their knowledge and skills in the quest to see a safer industry.”

The funding is being administered by our Fishermen’s Training team
