Grant-aided PFDs with PLBs

Grant-aided Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) with integrated Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs).

Applications are still being accepted for a grant-aided PFDs with PLBs until 31 August 2018.  Please apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!

With the support of Seafish, the Welsh Fishing Safety Committee (WFSC) is offering owners of active, commercial Welsh-licensed Fishing Vessels grant-aided Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) with integrated Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) at a heavily discounted rate ('WFSC Essential Safety Equipment' project).

The equipment offered is the Mullion Compact Supreme 150 Heavy Duty Wipe clean PFD with integrated Kannad SafeLink SOLO PLB. This state-of-the-art integrated safety equipment, normally worth over £350, is available for just £15.

This discount has been made possible by funding received from Seafarer's UK and the Welsh Government.

Since the scheme opened in April 2018, over 275 individual vessel applications have been received for over 630 PFDs with PLBs. That's over 80% of the active Welsh fishing fleet who have taken up this offer.

Why apply?

As well as drastically improving the chances of rescue and survival in a man-overboard incident, this essential life-saving equipment will support compliance to changes in health & safety legislation;

  • In 2018 the International Labour Organisation: Work in Fishing Convention (ILO 188) is expected to come into force in the UK which will bring new legal responsibilities on Vessel Owners and Skippers and require fishermen to wear Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) on deck whilst working at sea, unless a written risk assessment demonstrates that they have eliminated the risk of going overboard.
  •  Under MSN 1871, the Small Fishing Vessel Code of Practice, the use of Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) (or equivalent) will be mandatory from 23 October 2019.
