This meeting will look at the latest ICES advice on the key commercial species in the North East Atlantic.

In June 2023 the European Commission concluded that the overall sustainability of the EU fisheries has improved and fewer stocks are overfished. At the same time, more efforts are necessary to ensure the resilience of fishing activities and continuous improvement of the fish stocks status. The EU Communication shows that fish stocks in the North East Atlantic are generally within healthy ranges. In 2003, most stocks of interest to the EU were heavily overfished and the median fishing mortality in the North East Atlantic was 1.68 FMSY (the fishing pressure that gives the maximum sustainable yield in the long-term). The rate has since fallen, with the latest assessment pointing to the best so far sustainability results, with the lowest value in 2021 at 0.76 FMSY.

This meeting will look at the latest advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) on the key commercial species for the UK supply chain. We'll also look ahead to the negotiations for 2024.

These groups provide a discussion platform for some of the most important issues facing the seafood industry, particularly in relation to the responsible sourcing of seafood. They are an opportunity for all those involved in the seafood supply chain to reach a consensus on common issues.
