This meeting will look at how Government policy is aiming to support growth of the finfish, shellfish and seaweed farming sectors in the UK.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) report 2022 states aquaculture has great potential to feed and nourish the world’s growing population, as long as this growth is sustainable.

Aquaculture has a crucial role to play in contributing to our food security, as well as providing healthy and nutritious food with lower greenhouse gas emissions than many other farmed sources of animal protein. This is backed by the Government Food Strategy which referred to seafood as a "potentially lower-carbon and healthy source of protein which can grow sustainably to fulfil its potential within the food sector.”

This Aquaculture Common Issues Group meeting will look at how Government policy is aiming to support the growth of the finfish, shellfish and seaweed farming sectors, as well as the wider aquaculture supply chain in the UK.

These groups provide a discussion platform for some of the most important issues facing the seafood industry, particularly in relation to the responsible sourcing of seafood. They are an opportunity for all those involved in the seafood supply chain to reach a consensus on common issues.
