Fact Sheet: Social responsibility in seafood - Seafish role. April 2018

Karen Green

Social responsibility is paramount to Seafish and to the entire seafood industry. The definition of social responsibility is the idea that businesses balance proft-making activities with activities that benefit society; it involves developing businesses with a positive relationship to the society in which they operate. This factsheet provides an overview of the work Seafish is doing to help the seafood industry address issues relating to labour and worker welfare including: outreach activities; forming the Seafood Ethics Common Language Group; assessing ethical issues in the UK seafood supply chain; supporting seafood businesses to comply with UK Modern Slavery legislation; developing Tools for Ethical Seafood Sourcing (TESS) to signpost businesses to resources that can support them in addressing ethical issues in their supply chain; and developing the voluntary Responsible Fishing Scheme (RFS) and Responsible Fishing Ports Schemes (RFPS).
