This meeting will look at recent developments and the current state of play.

Selective gear innovations can help advance sustainability (economic, environmental and social) in all wild capture fisheries, by helping to reduce catches of unwanted fish. The selectivity of a fishing method reflects its ability to select the desired species and sizes of individuals from the ecosystem in which the fishery operates. Gear trials over many years have influenced the gear now being used in commercial fishing. The implementation of the EU Landing Obligation (LO) provided an even stronger incentive to increase the selectivity in UK and EU fisheries.

This Fisheries Management and Innovation Group (FMIG) last reviewed this topic in July 2022. This online, bite size session will look at recent developments for active gears, including trawls, dredges and purse seines, and for passive gears, including entangling nets, hooks and lines, and pots.
