Aquaculture water quality and classification for shellfish

We work with producers, regulators and researchers to support the regulation of UK shellfish waters and encourage high-quality shellfish production.

Water quality and classification

Limited availability of high-quality shellfish waters remains a challenge for sustainable growth of shellfish farming in the UK.

Water in a shellfish production or relay area is assessed and classified according to the level of E. coli detected in shellfish flesh. The classification determines what treatment is required before live bivalve molluscs (LBM) from this area can be sold for human consumption.

Since the UK’s departure from the EU, regulations for exporting shellfish produced in class B waters in Great Britain have changed. Currently, these shellfish cannot be exported to the EU for depuration or relaying.

Shellfish Stakeholder Working Group (SSWG)

The SSWG brings together industry representatives, regulators and experts to address water quality challenges and support the growth of the UK aquaculture industry. The group evaluates regulatory issues, shares expertise and works to mitigate potential impacts.

Its objectives includes:

  • Advising on water quality issues affecting the shellfish industry.
  • Supporting mitigation efforts for any identified risks.
  • Identifying areas for regulatory system improvements.

Through this work, the group aims to ensure shellfish controls are effective, streamlined and support the supply of safe, high-quality products to consumers.

The group is facilitated by Seafish .If you would like to be invited to attend these sessions, please get in touch with our Secretariat at regulation@seafish.co.uk.

The SSWG meets three times per year, with additional sessions as needed.  Smaller working groups may also be formed to address specific issues.
