What is an export health certificate?

Learn when you need an Export Health Certificate for seafood exports and who can issue it.

An Export Health Certificate (EHC) is an official document that confirms seafood exports meet the health requirements of the destination country.

There is sometimes confusion over whether to use local authority (LA) certification or if EHCs must be supplied by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), these are sometimes called official certificates.

Official certificates have been agreed by the importing country and are published online.

Whether it is possible to use a LA certificate depends on the requirements of the importing country - some accept imports with LA certification, while others require an official EHC.

It is also important to note that official veterinarians (OVs) cannot sign and stamp LA-supplied certificates. This is because APHA authorisation for certifying OVs only covers them to sign APHA-issued official export health certification. LA certifying officers can sign and stamp LA-supplied certificates.
