Socio-economic study of Welsh fisheries for the Welsh Government

A socio-economic and cultural survey of 11 Welsh fisheries that gives stakeholders the chance to support thriving fisheries and coastal communities.

A Welsh translation of this content can be found towards the bottom of this page.

Purpose of the work

We are undertaking a socio-economic study of 11 commercial and recreational fisheries to understand the direct and indirect benefits of these fisheries to local coastal communities around Wales, and how these benefits could be maximised and measured.

The study will comprise of a survey to collect data from commercial fishers, recreational fishers, local businesses, seafood processors, wholesalers, and members of coastal communities. Seafish will analyse the information gathered and submit the report to the Welsh Government in mid-2026.

The fisheries in scope of the study include:

  • Commercial and recreational fisheries for brown crab, European lobster, and cockles;
  • Commercial fisheries for bass, king scallop, queen scallop, and whelks, and;
  • Recreational fisheries for bluefin tuna (including charter fishing vessels).

Over the course of the research, we want to speak to anyone with an interest in these fisheries, or from local communities where these fisheries form an important part of the local economy, culture, or heritage. Field researchers will be visiting ports and harbours around Wales in August and September 2025 to meet with commercial and recreational fishers, charter vessel skippers, seafood processors, retailers and fishmongers, small businesses, hospitality, and local residents. We’ll be asking people about:

  • The contribution of both commercial and recreational fisheries to the Welsh economy.
  • The ways in which Welsh fisheries are important to them.
  • The role fishing plays in the social and cultural heritage of their coastal community.

Why should you get involved?

The study provides an opportunity for you to share your views on fisheries and their impact on local communities. The outputs of the research will contribute towards ensuring the long-term sustainability and economic profitability of Welsh fisheries, which in turn will support thriving local coastal communities in Wales.

The results will enable policy and decision-makers to balance economic, cultural, and environmental considerations when implementing legislation.

Astudiaeth economaidd-gymdeithasol a diwylliannol o bysgodfeydd Cymru, ar ran Llywodraeth Cymru

Arolwg economaidd-gymdeithasol a diwylliannol o 11 o bysgodfeydd yng Nghymru, a gynhelir gan Seafish. Bydd yn cynnig cyfle i randdeiliaid gymryd rhan yn y broses er mwyn cefnogi pysgodfeydd a chymunedau arfordirol ffyniannus.

Diben y gwaith

Rydyn ni’n cynnal astudiaeth economaidd-gymdeithasol o 11 pysgodfa fasnachol a hamdden i ddeall manteision uniongyrchol ac anuniongyrchol y pysgodfeydd hyn i gymunedau arfordirol lleol ledled Cymru, a sut gellir gwneud y mwyaf o’r manteision hyn.

Bydd yr astudiaeth yn cynnwys arolwg i gasglu data gan bysgotwyr masnachol, pysgotwyr hamdden, busnesau lleol, proseswyr bwyd môr, cyfanwerthwyr, ac aelodau o gymunedau arfordirol. Bydd Seafish yn dadansoddi’r wybodaeth a gesglir ac yn cyflwyno’r adroddiad i Lywodraeth Cymru yng nghanol 2026.

Ymhlith y pysgodfeydd a gwmpesir gan yr astudiaeth mae:

  • Pysgodfeydd masnachol a hamdden ar gyfer crancod brown, cimychiaid Ewropeaidd, a chocos;
  • Pysgodfeydd masnachol ar gyfer draenogod y môr, cregyn y brenin, cregyn y frenhines, a chregyn moch; a
  • Physgodfeydd hamdden ar gyfer tiwnaod mawrion (gan gynnwys llongau pysgota siarter).

Bydd ymchwilwyr maes yn ymweld â phorthladdoedd ledled Cymru ym mis Awst a mis Medi 2025 i gwrdd â physgotwyr masnachol a hamdden, capteiniaid llongau siarter, proseswyr bwyd môr, manwerthwyr a gwerthwyr pysgod, busnesau bach, busnesau lletygarwch, a thrigolion lleol.

Byddwn yn gofyn i bobl ynglŷn â:

  • Chyfraniad pysgodfeydd masnachol a hamdden i economi Cymru;
  • Y ffyrdd y mae pysgodfeydd Cymru yn bwysig iddyn nhw; a’r
  • Rôl y mae pysgota yn ei chwarae yn nhreftadaeth gymdeithasol a diwylliannol eu cymuned arfordirol.

Pam ddylech chi gymryd rhan?

Mae’r astudiaeth yn rhoi cyfle i chi rannu eich barn ar bysgodfeydd a’u heffaith ar gymunedau lleol. Bydd canlyniadau’r gwaith ymchwil yn cyfrannu tuag at sicrhau cynaliadwyedd hirdymor a phroffidioldeb economaidd pysgodfeydd Cymru a fydd, yn eu tro, yn cefnogi cymunedau arfordirol ffyniannus yng Nghymru.

Bydd y canlyniadau yn galluogi gwneuthurwyr polisi a phenderfyniadau i gydbwyso ystyriaethau economaidd, diwylliannol ac amgylcheddol wrth weithredu deddfwriaeth.

Cymerwch ran

Gallwch gymryd rhan yn yr astudiaeth drwy gwblhau cyfweliad personol / ffôn, arolwg ar-lein, neu drwy fynd i un o’n grwpiau ffocws. Ceir rhagor o fanylion isod.

Llenwch ein harolwg ar-lein yma: https://form.jotform.com/252153775333356

Ewch i un o’n grwpiau ffocws personol ar yr amseroedd a’r dyddiadau a restrir isod.
