An independent group of retailers and supply-chain companies.

The Global Tuna Alliance is an independent group of retailers and supply-chain companies, working to ensure that tuna ultimately meets the highest standards of environmental performance and social responsibility.

The GTA is committed to realising harvest strategies for tuna fisheries, avoidance of IUU products, improved traceability as well as environmental sustainability, and progressing work on human rights in tuna fisheries and to implementing the objectives laid out in World Economic Forum’s Tuna 2020 Traceability Declaration as championed by Friends of Ocean Action. They work collaboratively with member and non-member organizations to find industry-wide solutions to efficiently implement commitments to GTA commitments and the WEF 2020 Traceability Declaration commitments on:

  • Tuna Traceability
  • Socially responsible Tuna Supply Chains
  • Environmentally Responsible Tuna Sources
  • Government Partnership

In October 2020 the GTA released its Tuna 2020 social responsibility toolkit. The aim of this toolkit is to provide support to Tuna 2020 Traceability Declaration signatories in meeting their commitment to a socially responsible tuna supply chain.

Significance for seafood businesses:

The GTA is a unique multi-stakeholder alliance consisting of European and American retailers and supply chain companies. Collaborative, industry-wide, pre-competitive initiatives can help to identify problems and share the cost of developing and implementing solutions. These provide opportunities to share knowledge and insight, learn from others, build your own knowledge, share best practice, and network with others in the same situation.
