During 2016, each Stella Maris region held a chaplains’ conference devoted exclusively to fishers. These regional conferences informed the programme for the 2017 World Congress, held in Taiwan and focused on fishing. At a conference in Sydney in March 2017 the Stella Maris seafarers’ App was endorsed and the coordinators agreed to promote it to seafarers across their regions.
In July 2018 Stella Maris joined forces with the Santa Marta Group to tackle the issue of slavery at sea. The organizations ran a series of workshops aimed at educating and informing chaplains, volunteers, port officials and police about slavery at sea and what can be done to protect and support seafarers and fishermen. The first workshop took place in Tilbury Docks in 2018, followed by Santos, Brazil in May. More workshops were to be rolled-out at ports globally.
Significance for seafood businesses:
Specifically covers fishers. Useful for awareness as an organisation working to support the industry, and improve governance, safety and welfare within the global seafood industry.
