Stock status
Pacific cod in the Aleutian Islands area has been scored as a moderate risk. The stock has no reference points for sustainability although the biomass shows a rising trend since 2010.
The stock was scored using the RASS scoring guidance for data limited stocks. The rising biomass trend and the moderate to high fishbase vulnerability score of 50/100, implies a moderate risk level. Also the most recent assessment indicates that the stock is not being subject to overfishing.
Management
The management of Aleutian Islands Pacific cod has been scored a low risk. This is because management decisions are informed by an annual data limited stock assessment and catches of Pacific cod are well below the advised catch (and are far below the combined ESBAI catch), and there is a comprehensive regulatory framework in place.
Bycatch
The bycatch impact of the pot and trap AI Pacific cod fishery has been scored a low risk.
Habitat
The habitat impact of the pot and trap and AI Pacific cod fishery has been scored a low risk. This is because pots and traps cause limited damage to seafloor habitats.
