Project UK Fisheries Improvement Projects

A collaborative stakeholder partnership project with the MSC that aims to improve the environmental sustainability of selected UK fisheries.

Project UK is facilitated by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). It uses MSC’s Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) tools to identify areas for improvement within certain UK fisheries. Once an area of improvement is identified, FIP Action Plans are developed to deliver the identified improvements.

Each FIP Action Plan is designed to improve the fishery so it can apply to be considered for full MSC certification. Stakeholder steering groups set clear milestones for each action within the fishery’s Action Plan. Progress is then tracked and reviewed annually through the MSC’s Benchmarking and Tracking tool

The fisheries were selected by the UK supply chain that identified UK fisheries that they wanted to see progress towards MSC certification. This process involved representatives from the catching, processing, food service, retail and NGO sectors.

Project UK Steering Groups

Project UK Steering Groups are made up of representatives from the fishing industry, scientists, NGOs, retailers and the supply chain. These groups are designed to inform, guide and implement the work identified within their fishery’s Action Plan. Each fishery has its own Steering Group and the groups meet approximately every four to six months.
