Fisheries management

Responsibly-sourced seafood lies at the heart of a sustainable 21st-century seafood industry.

Data limited fisheries

Data limited fisheries are those fisheries where stock assessments are not feasible, yet they provide continuing yields for fisheries. Recognising the need for a shared understanding of how fish stocks are assessed and fisheries are managed, we have produced an Overview of Data-Limited Stock Assessment. It gives an overview of how fish stocks are assessed when there isn’t sufficient data available to use conventional models. The Overview is supported with a more in-depth document Guide to Data-Limited Stock Assessment

These documents form part of our suite of Sustainable Fisheries Assessment and Management Guides.

Risk Assessment for Sourcing Seafood

For information on the status of fish stocks see our Risk Assessment for Sourcing Seafood (RASS) tool.

Conserving fish stocks

In partnership with the fishing and aquaculture industries, we are involved in a number of important initiatives to protect fish stocks for future generations. We also monitor the progress of wider industry initiatives and key legislation relating to the protection of fish stocks.

Information notes for North Sea cod and Northeast Atlantic mackerel

We have produced information notes to give an overview of the stock status and management advice for the North Sea cod fishery and Northeast Atlantic mackerel fishery.

These documents have been prepared for a non-technical audience and are primarily directed at seafood processors and retailers. They are available to download from the links below
