Impact of Covid-19 on aquaculture

We are working in collaboration with the Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB) and the British Trout Association (BTA) to assess the impact of Covid-19 on aquaculture businesses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Our findings will be provided to government to help inform their response and any sector specific action they may take. They will also be shared with SAGB, BTA and their members.

We currently gathering information from aquaculture businesses on the following areas:

  1. To assess the impact of Covid-19 on UK aquaculture businesses and current activity levels across sites.
  2. To establish impacts on business structure, sites, employees, stocks, transportation, lost income (sales, cash flow and bad debt), and any other issues that businesses consider relevant (e.g. how social distancing is affecting operations, animal welfare concerns, biosecurity, water carrying capacity).
  3. To understand how long businesses can continue in this current market situation.
  4. To gather information on the suitability of the current support package for UK businesses and what other forms of support may be necessary

How to participate

We will be telephoning aquaculture businesses from Thursday 2 - Thursday 9 April 2020 to discuss these issues.
