Atlantic Halibut

Hippoglossus hippoglossus

The Atlantic halibut is a large flatfish that can reach a weight of over 300kg in the wild.

Efforts to farm Atlantic halibut in land-based systems and marine net-pens were initiated in the 1980s. However, technical challenges in the early stages of production have hampered the development of the industry and the species remains a niche product.

In 2016 the global output of Atlantic halibut aquaculture was 1,528 tonnes, 96% of which produced in Norway.
