Nutrient removal by UK bivalve aquaculture: Case studies and considerations

Summary
Aquatic ecosystems face many challenges, including eutrophication which is caused by excess of nutrients in the water. Bivalve shellfish (such as mussels, oysters, and clams) are filter feeders and can contribute to water quality improvement through nutrient uptake by removing algae as they feed. This is also applicable to bivalve aquaculture. In 2022, Seafish undertook an initial assessment of the nutrient removal potential of key commercial bivalve shellfish species in the UK. This report builds on that work through specific UK case studies and an overview of bivalve aquaculture potential in nutrient mitigation schemes to provide an evidence base for water quality ecosystem services of cultivated bivalves.
