The Pelagic Industry Issues Group — Seafish

The Pelagic Industry Issues Group

The group brings people together to discuss and share knowledge on issues affecting the UK pelagic fishing and processing industry.

The Pelagic Industry Issues Group (PIIG) provides a safe meeting space to discuss the key challenges facing the pelagic sector. Pelagic fish live in the water column (not near the bottom or the shore) of coasts, open oceans, and lakes. They are generally an oily fish that are mobile or migratory.

The key areas for discussion are pelagic fish stock status and environmental impact, as well as the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for each species. There is also a focus on market support, particularly for export markets and processing efficiency.

People take part to keep-up-to-date with the latest developments, to be part of a cross-industry discussion and listen to the issues raised by other parts of the industry. They can also raise their own issues, present new ideas, network with other people or make new contacts.

The group is led by our industry and we take responsibility for running the PIIG. The Group generally meets once a year.  The PIIG brings together people who represent the catching, fishmeal and primary and secondary processing sectors in the UK. Other people who attend are government, scientists and industry bodies.
