Seafood Issues Groups

We run groups for people interested in responsible and ethical sourcing in the seafood industry in the UK.

The purpose of the groups is to bring people together to find solutions to shared problems, providing the space to discuss the issues facing the seafood industry in the UK. The groups are led by our industry and we take responsibility for running them. 

The current Issues Groups are:

The Seafood Issues Groups usually meet in London two or three times a year. Due to the Covid19 pandemic, we’re holding a series of shorter online meetings from May 2020 to September 2020. We’re aiming to hold two meetings a month, rotating four of the groups - Common Language Group (CLG), Seafood Ethics Common Language Group (SECLG), Aquaculture Common Issues Group (ACIG) and the Fisheries Management and Innovation Group (FMIG).  We’ll review the face to face meetings later in the year.

May 

Date and time: Wednesday 27 May 2020. 2.00pm - 3.30pm. BST
Group: Seafood Ethics Common Language Group 
Theme: ILO 188 compliance: best practice. This Seafood Ethics Common Language Group Bite-size online meeting will explore the adoption of the ILO Work in Fishing Convention (C188) by the UK fishing industry and the vulnerabilities created by COVID-19. Our speakers are:

  • Julie Carlton, Seafarer Safety and Health Manager, Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Julie will focus on the MCA Marine Guidance and Information Notes specifically the newly published Voluntary Code of Practice for the Employment of Non-EEA Fishing Crew. 
  • Mike Park, Scottish White Fish Producers Association. Mike will look at best practice for the SWFPA vessel owners and crew and look ahead to a new recruitment agency initiative. 
  • David Dickens, Chief Executive, The Fishermen’s Mission. David will provide feedback on the Fishermen's Mission response and the issues they are dealing with.
