The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has produced its annual catch advice for Northeast Atlantic mackerel.
The latest ICES advice, published on 1 October 2019, makes an upward revision of the mackerel stock size compared with previous advice given in September 2018 and May 2019. The current estimated spawning stock biomass is well above previous estimates and this means that more mackerel could be safely taken from the stock in 2020 than advised in 2019.
Our Responsible Sourcing team has produced a revised briefing note outlining how the assessment and management of the mackerel stock has evolved over recent years, and the challenges associated with the existing stock exploitation outside the Coastal States Agreement. The implications of these challenges for MSC certification are also covered.
