The National Fish and Chip Awards celebrate excellence in the industry and raise standards for fish and chip businesses across the country. We showcase talent, innovation and commitment to providing excellent fish and chips as well as customer service, training and development and sourcing sustainable fish. The National Fish & Chip Awards open for entry from 1 May each year, with categories closing each month up until the end of October. Judging for the awards is staggered, with announcements made throughout the year. They are completely free to enter, with no fees or requirements to pay to upgrade your shop before entry. How do you enter the National Fish and Chip Awards?
Entries to the national fish and chip awards can be submitted though our online entry platform. You will need to register for an awards account, by completing your business details. Entries are open from May - October with the various categories closing throughout this period. Regular updates and deadline reminders are posted on our social media channels and on the awards website, as well as in regular newsletters.
Criteria and closing dates are available to view by signing up for an account and starting a new entry. You can save your entry as many times as you like, but entries must be submitted by 23:59 on the day the category closes.
You will often be encouraged to provide additional supporting materials as part of your entry, so please consider photography or evidence that may be submitted alongside your online entry form.
What are the award categories?
Within the national fish and chip awards, there are 15 award categories open for entry - in addition to our outstanding achievement award to celebrate long term commitment to the sector. We regualrly review our award categories in order to hihglight great business practices.

Why should you enter the awards?

Fish and chips are iconic within the UK and as such, local media are always interested in covering local participation in the National Fish & Chip Awards.
As well as the potential boost to business by entering and being shortlisted for one of the awards, there are also opportunities to travel and learn, with all expense-paid study trips to learn more about the seafood supply chain.
What is the judging process?
The National Fish and Chip Awards are judged using the following stages of judging, with this process regualrly reviewed by an independent judging panel made up of industry experts:
- Stage One: Online Entry Submission (including supporting evidence, photography & more).
- Stage Two: Mystery Dining Visit.
- Stage Three: Internal Audit by industry experts.
- Winners Announced and feedback provided to entrants.
As part of the takeaway award, we have additional judging rounds for top 20 shops, and a presentation from the final top 10 shops in order to decide the overall champion. The initial stage of judging in the national fish and chip awards is based on the text based answers provided in the online submission form. At this stage, judges will assess the response to the criteria and give marks based on how effectively the shop or business have evidenced their commitment to a quality product and service.

Where can I find the previous shortlists and award winners?
Shortlists for the award categories and released on a rolling calendar within the awards competition period (May - October) in order to maximise opportunities for media relations and also to increase awareness and interest in the awards.

Our overall award winners are announced at the final ceremony which is held in London each January.
Who are our supporters?
The national fish and chip awards are supported by our key industry partners, with an ongoing commitment to development and transparency through our fish and chip awards steering group.
The group is made up of a number of key members of the fish and chip trade who help us to make effective decisions about the awards and to drive positive change in the industry. Meetings are held three times a year, where comments and feedback can be discussed in a constructive manner. These members include organisations such as NEODA, NFFF & AHDB.
What are the minumum quality requirements for a shop to enter?
The national fish and chip awards are all about celebrating excellence in the industry, and therefore, minimum requirements must be met in order to progress an entry forward. When visited by the mystery diner for scoring, if a shop does not meet the required minimum levels expected then we reserve the right to remove a high scoring online paperwork submission from the entries.
