UPDATE: From 31 December 2018, MSN 1871 Amndt 1 (F), in accordance with MGN 588 (F), will require that the wearing of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is mandatory on board fishing vessels, unless a written risk assessment demonstrates that the risk of going overboard has been eliminated.
Please note that from 31 December 2018 public funding can no longer be used to purchase PFDs for fishermen in the UK and the grant-aided PFDs with PLBs offered by the Welsh Fishing Safety Committee (WFSC) with the support of Seafish will no longer available.
2018 Welsh Fishing Safety Committee (WFSC) Essential Safety Equipment project
With the support of Seafish, the Welsh Fishing Safety Committee (WFSC) is offering owners of active, commercial Welsh-licensed Fishing Vessels grant-aided Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) with integrated Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) at a heavily discounted rate.
This discount has been made possible by funding received from Seafarer's UK and the Welsh Government.
Since the scheme opened in April 2018, over 285 individual Welsh fishing vessel applications have been received for over 660 PFDs with PLBs. The scheme will close on 31 December 2018 when PFD provision and wear becomes a legal requirement under MSN 1871 Amndt 1 (F).
