Funding to support online learning

We have new funding available to support online learning opportunities while Covid-19 social distancing requirements prevent the delivery of face to face taught training courses.

Funding for fishermen’s e-learning

Funding has been provided by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Trinity House to enable us to offer free online tutor support and assessments via our network of approved training providers for the following Seafish Online Training courses:

  • Navigation
  • Engineering
  • Stability awareness

These courses have been selected for funding because they make up some of the requirements of our voluntary under 16.5m skipper certificates. Fishermen who pass the online supervised end-of-course assessments will be issued with Seafish certificates for two-day navigation, two-day engineering and one-day stability awareness for experienced fishermen.

Any fishermen wanting to take advantage of this offer should contact our Fishermen’s Training team on The team will provide whatever assistance is required and arrange tutor support and/or assessment.

Funded e-learning for onshore workers

As a special measure during the Covid-19 lockdown, Seafish is subsidising the cost of e-learning for workers in the onshore sectors of the seafood industry.

Funding will cover the full cost of the following e-learning courses, allowing learners who pass an invigilated exam to gain a regulated qualification for free:

Funding can also be used to contribute towards the cost of our remote learning Intermediate Food Hygiene qualification. Further information on this course is available on our Food Hygiene and HACCP Training Courses webpage.

Funding can also support part of the cost of the following taught courses, delivered by video conference software:

This funding to support onshore training courses is available during 2020 (subject to approval). To register for support please apply to using this expression of interest form, or via your local Seafish approved trainer.

Skills development Scotland are providing £18K of funding through the Scottish Seafood Training Network. Visit the Seafood Training Academy website for more details on how to apply.
