Fishmeal and fishoil

The need to provide fish as feed for other fish is seen as a challenge to the growth of the aquaculture sector given that the amount of fish that can be produced annually from the world is finite.

The need to provide marine ingredients such as fishmeal and fish oilas feed for farmed fish is seen as a challenge to the growth of the aquaculture sector given that the amount of fish that can be produced annually from the world is finite.

Fishmeal, is a brown flour obtained after cooking, pressing, drying and milling whole fish and fish trimmings, and is important for almost all forms of finfish requiring feed.

When prepared from whole fish, fishmeal is made almost exclusively using small pelagic species which live in the surface or middle waters of the sea. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation says 90% of fish used in making fishmeal and fish oil is “presently unmarketable in large quantities as human food”.

Fishmeal production also offers the seafood industry a unique opportunity for recycling the otherwise unusable trimmings discarded by the seafood processing sector.  According to IFFO The Marine Ingredients Organisation the fishmeal and fish oil used globally in aquaculture feeds is increasingly derived from fishery and aquaculture processing by-product. The utilisation of these by-products as a raw material to produce fishmeal and fish oil is in the region of 25%-35%, and is expected to rise to 49% by 2022.

Also, as feed companies continue to develop their aquaculture feed formulations the inclusion of marine ingredients will carry on decreasing.
