The Seafish mission is to support a profitable, sustainable and socially responsible seafood industry. Our work for the industry aims to enhance its reputation, promote seafood consumption and inform decision-making. Successful SIP applications resonated with these criteria, and projects supported were innovative, supply-chain and quality orientated, and reflected the diversity of current and potential seafood offerings to consumers in the UK and elsewhere. As these research contracts are concluding their results and reports are being publicised by Seafish and posted on the SIP pages.
Aquaculture-related SIP Projects
Two successful SIP project applications focused strongly on aquaculture and how this growing sector could be supported in future:
- Closing the Circle: Aquaculture Development in Enclosed Waters
Seafish has supported this South Wales based SIP project which examines the opportunities for aquaculture in/around enclosed marine water bodies, as well as the development of a generic design for a shellfish hatchery. The proposed Tidal Lagoon in Swansea Bay (TLSB) case study is a significant focus of this SIP project which has been led by Martin Syvret (Aquafish Solutions Ltd.) and Dr Andrew Woolmer (Salacia-Marine) in collaboration with other industry partners.
The outputs of this SIP project consist of three inter-related elements:
- The Aquaculture Opportunities for Enclosed Marine Water Bodies - Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Case Study report
- The Development of a Generic Shellfish Hatchery Design with Associated Spatting Ponds report
- An Aquaculture Site Scoping Matrix

- Exploiting the Potential for a Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries Centre in SW England
The feasibility study presents the concept of developing an aquaculture and fisheries research and development centre at a former AstraZeneca laboratory in Brixham, Devon now owned by Plymouth University.
The project team (Tim Goodwin of Sustainable Leadership, Ltd., supported by ABPmer) undertook in-depth stakeholder consultation and reviewed the research needs of the seafood industry. The report explores the opportunity for an innovation hub to enable exploration and knowledge sharing in aquaculture, applied fisheries, and seafood supply chain, and to become home to a diverse and forward-facing community fostering new ideas and approaches to the UKs biggest seafood supply challenges.
