Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

  • Inaccessible PDFs: Some of our PDF documents are inaccessible to screen readers and lack accessible HTML alternatives. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criteria 1.1.1 (Non-text Content) and 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).
  • Ambiguous Links: Some web page links are ambiguous, using generic text like “click here” which does not explain the link's purpose out of context. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link Purpose - In Context).
  • iFrame Navigation (iOS): Some content inside iFrames is not accessible via the VoiceOver screen reader on iOS devices due to a known Apple iOS bug. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criteria 2.1.1 (Keyboard) and 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value).
  • Podcast Alternatives: Our podcasts do not currently have text transcripts or accessible alternatives to audio. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.1 (Audio-only and Video-only - Prerecorded).
  • Skip navigation links missing: Fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.1 (Bypass Blocks).
  • No facility to change text size or color contrast: Fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.4 (Resize Text)and Success Criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast - Minimum) if the default site styling does not scale cleanly or meet required ratios.
  • Inconsistent or broken navigation icons: Fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 3.2.4 (Consistent Identification) and Success Criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content) if the decorative icons lack proper empty alt tags or confuse screen readers.

Documents and PDFs

  • Missing document structure, headings, and descriptive titles: Fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships) and Success Criterion 2.4.2 (Page Titled).

Images

  • Images missing alternative text, or having poor alt text: Fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).
  • Images containing text that is difficult to read: Fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.5 (Images of Text).

Technical/screen reader bugs

  • Input fields using aria-label or title attributes that fail to announce on certain screen readers: Fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value).

AAA Standard

Some pages have the following issues that fail the 'AAA' standard of the WCAG Guidelines. This is not currently a requirement but we include it, as it would be good practice to eliminate these in the future:

  • Some links open in new windows without making the visitor aware of this previously
  • CSS interactions and transitions are used without providing a facility to turn them off

The following issues may occur with screen readers:

  • The use of input type=text with aria-label attribute does not work with some screen readers
  • The use of input type=text with title attribute does not work with some screen readers
  • Replacing link text with aria-label attribute does not work with some screen readers

Disproportionate burden

Not applicable.

We are aware that there are additional accessibility issues within the site. These are not currently a legal requirement, but we wish to include them for transparency and to express our desire to resolve these issues as time and budgetary constraints permit.

How this website was tested

This website was tested for compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines V2.2 level A and level AA, using a variety of software and extensive manual checking.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Images
All new images added to the site are given alt-text as standard. Further assessment will be done to discover older images that do not currently have alt-text and this will either be added or the image in question will be removed.

Videos
All new videos added to the site are created with captions as standard. Further assessment will be done to discover older videos that do not currently have captions and these will either be added or the video in question will be removed.

Documents
We launched a new internal brand guideline in January 2025, which included a template for fully accessible PDF documents to be created for website upload. A larger-scale document audit is set to take place in 2026/27 whereby a number of older documents will be archived and made available only by request.

We will update the accessibility statement as and when required.
