Helping exporters navigate EU import controls
While some countries experienced disruption as the new IUU system was introduced, UK exporters reported minimal disruption.
What was the industry challenge?
In January 2026, the EU introduced significant changes to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing controls for imports into member states. UK seafood exporters now needed to collect additional data and submit more documentation, creating concern about administrative burden, readiness and the potential for disruption to EU trade.
How did Seafish and its partners respond?
We supported the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) to help exporters prepare. This included early warning through the Seafish Trade Facilitation Forum, a dedicated workshop with MMO to explain the new requirements in detail, and follow-up discussion after implementation. We also used website content and social media to raise awareness and direct businesses to practical guidance.
What was the impact?
While some countries experienced disruption as the new system was introduced, UK exporters reported minimal disruption. We supported early engagement, clear guidance and direct access to MMO, which helped businesses understand the changes, prepare in good time and maintain seafood exports to the EU.
