Gear technology knowledge boosted at Danish Flume Tank

The flume tank visit was very beneficial in further developing my understanding of how the industry operates, and it generated a lot of valuable discussion within the group, particularly given the mix of roles across policy and the supply chain.

What was the industry challenge? 

Innovative fishing gear can help improve selectivity, reduce unwanted catch, protect seabed habitats and improve vessels’ energy efficiency. However, fishing gear can be highly technical. Flume tanks are an excellent way to demonstrate, to both fishers and non-fishers,  how gear performs in the water, and understand how design and rigging choices affect outcomes.

How did Seafish and its partners respond? 

We organised a visit and delivered training for 14 UK seafood stakeholders to the Hirtshals flume tank in Denmark. The group included representatives from the seafood supply chain, government and environmental organisations. 

The flume tank provides a controlled environment where model fishing gear, including trawl nets and doors, can be assessed under simulated conditions. Participants saw fishing gear in action and explored how selective devices, net design and trawl door adjustments can influence catch, seabed impact and fuel use.

What was the impact? 

The visit helped senior seafood stakeholders develop a clearer understanding of how fishing gear works in practice, how design affects the species caught and why fishers choose particular gear configurations. 

By bringing different stakeholders together, the visit supported more informed discussion across policy, supply chains and sustainability initiatives. It also strengthened understanding of how gear innovation can support both environmental outcomes and efficient fishing operations.
