The EU/UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) came into force on 31 December 2020. This agreement provides regulatory autonomy of management decisions in each party’s waters. The UK is now able to establish its own regulations for fisheries, as provided for by the UK Fisheries Act 2020, and is no longer bound to the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) rules.
Trilateral and bilateral negotiations started in January between the UK and adjacent coastal states including the EU, Norway and the Faroe Islands to establish an agreement on total allowable catches for shared stocks and other fishery management measures for 2021.
With the UK participating for the first time as an independent Coastal State, this Fisheries Management and Innovation Group (FMIG) meeting will explain how the Coastal State process has worked this year, and look at the complexities of these negotiations, and the lessons learnt.

The FMIG is one of a number of Seafish-facilitated discussion groups, which focus on the integrity of the seafood supply chain. These groups provide a discussion platform for some of the most important issues facing the seafood industry, particularly in relation to the responsible sourcing of seafood.
People take part to keep-up-to-date with the latest developments, to be part of a cross-industry discussion and listen to the issues raised by other parts of the industry.
