Market Insight Analyst (16 months fixed term)

We are looking for a Market Insight Analyst (16 months fixed term) to join our Insight team here at Seafish. This role is based in Grimsby and reports to our Head of Insight.

1. Job Purpose

  • Deliver an integrated market insight service in response to stakeholder needs for market information at all stages of the seafood value chain.

2. Dimensions

  • Annual budget for market information is approximately £200k p.a. This is used for:
       - Procurement of contracts for external data provision.
       - Planning and commissioning new research projects (as applicable).
  • Manage data sources and databases to ensure they are maintained, fit for purpose and accurate.
  • Ensure externally purchased data is provided within the specific requirements of the respective contracts.
  • Manage external mailing service including contact information for 600+ stakeholders, ensuring details are maintained securely.
  • Maintenance of an area of the Seafish website which is not publicly accessible.

3. Principal Accountabilities 

  • Develop a comprehensive annual plan for market insight work; in conjunction with Head of Insight.
  • Implement the market insight plan to ensure delivery of a high level service to stakeholders.
  • Generate original information and actionable insight relevant to seafood businesses, media, Government and Seafish colleagues, from a wide range of market data sources.
  • Review and monitor incoming statistical data and reports to ensure data accuracy and quality.
  • Guide and influence industry stakeholders at a senior level, to facilitate sound category, sales, marketing and NPD strategies at every stage of the seafood value chain to grow sales and seafood consumption.
  • Alert stakeholders to market and supply trends and developing issues, advising them of the potential implications and opportunities for their business.
  • Provide responses to ad hoc market insight enquiries from stakeholders. Log and record details of the enquiries, including action and outcomes, to provide an estimate of the value of the advice delivered.
  • Build relationships with industry and other stakeholders, raising Seafish's reputation, credibility and profile by targeting industry's individual information and insight needs and delivering custom-made research solutions.
  • Tender, secure and manage a wide range of information on four major areas: retail, trade, foodservice and shopper. Ensuring  optimum benefit for industry for the budget available.
  • Identify, scope and project manage market focused research projects (as applicable).

4. Planning and organising 

  • Work to deadlines (daily, weekly, monthly) for the delivery of the market insight service, to ensure stakeholders receive valuable market and supply information.
  • Balance both pre-planned work (annually) as well as reactive (ad hoc) tasks.
  • Frequent requests for ad hoc information and advice requires a high degree of flexibility and use of own judgement to manage own workload and delivery on an ongoing basis.
  • Balancing the needs of a variety of stakeholders and requests for information requires the ability to prioritise, be well organised, and manage sometimes conflicting requirements and deadlines. 

5. Decision making and judgement

  • Checking externally provided data to ensure accuracy, requires a level of analysis and attention to detail to ensure any errors are resolved before publication.
  • Use of own judgement to provide relevant information and advice in external facing information and reports; the content of which will be used for commercial decisions by stakeholders.
  • Understanding and interpreting requests for information and use of own judgement on how best to respond and what information to provide. 
  • Accountability for the information and advice provided.
  • Use of initiative to identify new outputs that will be useful to stakeholders.

6. Essential working relationships 

The post requires both written and verbal  communication and interpersonal skills, required to engage and persuade stakeholders to change practices and grow seafood sales and /or seafood consumption

INTERNAL (face to face, phone, e-mail, formal presentations)

  • Work closely with other Market Insight Analyst to deliver the market insight plan including co-ordinating and collaborating on a daily basis. 
  • Regular contact with Head of Insight to review progress, delivery and to escalate issues.
  • Liaise with other Seafish colleagues across the whole organisation as required, to identify and provide the market and value chain data and insights to support/inform their activities and work areas.

EXTERNAL (delivery of information via face to face, e-mails, telephone, UK and International presentations at industry meetings, seminars & conferences)

  • An ability to communicate effectively at all levels, principally with senior management; summarising complex data and results of analysis simply and accurately, both verbally and in writing.
  • Liaise and network with industry, Government and media to ensure their needs for market data and insights at all stages of the value chain are met. 
  • Build and sustain relationships with key partners (notably data providers), ensuring regular (monthly) contact as a minimum. 
  • Monitor Seafish's contracts with external data suppliers to ensure data received is on time and accurate. Includes negotiating on the detail of contracts and managing ongoing service provision by contractors.
  • Plan, commission and manage the work of external data providers and other external consultants when undertaking new research (as applicable). 

7. Knowledge, skills and experience        

  • Educated to degree level 
  • 2-4 years of experience, ideally in a commercially facing seafood role, which demonstrates an in depth working knowledge of a commercial production and seafood trading environment 
  • Understanding of market research and statistical techniques and methodologies
  • Capability to use strategic thinking to generate original insight and ability to formulate plans and strategies to benefit both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to interpret  large amounts of complex information from multiple data sources and then be able to rationalise and translate this to produce original clear and concise reports and presentations which stakeholders can then use  to grow sales and/or seafood consumption
  • An intermediate knowledge in a range of disciplines including  economy (Global and UK), shopper trends (shopper confidence, missions, shopper journey), grocery trends (channels/fixture/estate), barriers to seafood consumption, market data (sector, segment, species, demographics, share of trade), foodservice trends (channels, dayparts, demographics); imports & exports (Global & UK) and landings 
  • Knowledge and use of Global and UK economy, retail, foodservice and trade and shopper insight in a commercial environment. 
  • Track record of successfully delivering market insight and related projects.
  • Working knowledge and practical application of project management.
  • IT skills; MS Office (Intermediate), Excel (Intermediate- Advanced).
  • In-depth knowledge of specialist market data sources e.g. retail databases.
  • Working knowledge and application of Seafish's policies and procedures.

8. Special features

  • The job requires travel throughout the UK, with overnight absences from home.
  • Occasional travel to the EU.
