Head of Marketing and Communications

We are looking for a Head of Marketing and Communications to join our Marketing and Communications team here at Seafish. This role is based in Edinburgh and reports to our Director of Corporate Relations.

1. Job Purpose

  • To manage the Marketing and Communications Team and all its outputs. As a member of the Senior Management Team, to support the delivery of Seafish's strategy, ensuring effective and synchronised organisational planning and performance.  As head of function, to lead Seafish's work to meet key High Level Objectives, with a primary focus on increasing consumption and enhancing reputation.

3. Accountabilities 

  • Accountable for the organisation's Communications & Marketing outputs, with 5 direct reports and a team of 13 in total 
  • As head of service, drive improvement in all areas of stakeholder communications, setting strategy in the areas of marketing and communications
  • Translating strategic goals - Contribute to the strategic development of organisation goals, and create and deliver aligned annual goals for the marketing and Communications team, ensuring they are understood, accepted and fulfilled by the staff
  • Decision making - Make effective and commercially aware decisions to the level of your responsibility and contribute to Executive decision making to maximise wider organisational performance
  • Managing individual and team performance - Lead and develop your team to successfully deliver individual and team goals and meet high standards, ensuring effective and continually improving  performance and alignment to our values framework
  • Managing resources and budgets c£2.5m - Create and manage the consumption and reputation budgets, allocating resources efficiently and effectively to manage costs and maximise performance, dealing promptly with resource inefficiencies and opportunities
  • Managing team performance - Create, monitor and deliver annual team success measures to maximise your teams contribution to the Seafish Corporate Plan, ensuring projects are managed effectively, and monitoring and reporting on progress to your Executive Director
  • Leading continuous improvement - Lead and support your team in working innovatively to continually improve service to industry and cost-management, and contribute to the leadership of wider organisational changes and improvements 
  • Partnership working - Build and manage relationships with key stakeholders to maximise the impact of your Team and the wider organisation in serving industry, and work collaboratively with Management team and other key individuals and teams internally  
  • Stakeholder communications - Maintain a regular communications programme to ensure the benefit of our Seafish  work is available to relevant internal and external stakeholders

4. Planning and organising 

  • Having a degree of autonomy within the confines of the Corporate Plan and budget, the Head of Team will liaise as required with the Corporate Relations Director, and involve the wider Leadership Team in working towards the achievement of longer term goals.

5. Decision making and judgement

  • This role has considerable autonomy and will require confident decision making
  • The role also carries considerable risk and will require careful management of sensitive situations

6. Essential working relationships 

Internal relationships

  • Work closely with Executive and SMT
  • 5 direct reports, with over sight in managing 11 staff in the team
  • Engage with staff at all levels 

External relationships

  • Work closely with Seafish panels to support delivery
  • Industry stakeholders - building relationships across the supply chain
  • Engagement with appointed suppliers and contractors for projects
  • Act as a representative of Seafish at events as directed.

7. Knowledge, skills and experience              

  • Degree or professional qualification in a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in a comms/marketing management role
  • Proven experience of managing and motivating people across a range of functions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Excellent budget management skills
  • Proven planning and organisational ability 
  • The ability to successfully juggle a number of high profile programmes
  • Excellent risk management skills
  • Fully competent in all areas of comms and marketing:
        - Marketing
        - Media management
        - Events management
        - Web, social media and digital promotions
  • Internal communications

8. Special features

  • Some out-of-hours working at events and travelling within the UK, as well as occasional international travel
