Funding is only available to new entrants and commercial fishermen who are fully compliant with Basic Safety Training Regulations. All applications for funding must be approved by us in advance of training being undertaken. we will consider funding any safety-related training that is not mandatory.

Thanks to the continued support from the EU and MCA, Seafish offers grant funding to support commercial fishermen undertaking voluntary (safety-related) training.

Funding is available to support training in the following areas:

  • Refresher training- Basic course and advanced courses for example fire-fighting and first aid, if applicable
  • Navigation- ECDIS etc.
  • Engineering- AEC course etc.
  • Stability Awareness
  • Radio- GMDSS etc
  • New Entrant training - Introduction to Commercial Fishing course
  • Deck and Engineering Certificates of Competency

How the Funding Support works

For Refresher Training just book the course you wish to refresh with your Seafish Approved Training Provider (ATP) and they will offer you the course free of charge as long as you meet the criteria for refresher funding. If you wish to do STCW Safety Training with anyone other than a Seafish ATP then you will have to fill our a training grant application form - see the Application Forms section to download a form.

For additional Voluntary Training for courses towards the u16.5m skippers ticket the same system applies as with the refresher training.

For more advanced qualifications such as a certificate of competency funding can only be obtained by submission of a grant application form and approval by Seafish.
