UK Scallop Group

Led by the Scallop Association with the Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB) as rapporteur, Chaired by James Wilson (Seafish Board) and supported by Seafish.

The aim of this group is to secure a sustainable future for the scallop harvesting sector that balances the need for environmental protection and profitable fishing operations.

This will be achieved by agreeing an "acceptable footprint" of scallop harvesting that allows fishers to harvest scallops while minimising the environmental impacts of their operations particularly in sensitive habitats. The group should be the forum for discussing what this footprint should be, and ultimately what the 'standard' should entail. It needs to be achievable and realistic for the fishermen, it needs to address the concerns from the environmental groups, and it needs to operate in a way that meets the requirements of the supply chain.
