Assessment of ethical issues

In March 2015 Seafish commissioned a study to assess the ethical issues impacting on seafood species landed into, and imported to the UK.

This comprehensive ethical assessment project has been completed by Roger Plant, an independent writer, trainer and consultant, and former Head of the International Labour Organization's Special Action Programme to Combat Forced Labour.

The aim was to provide a comprehensive description and analysis of ethical concerns pervading seafood production and processing activities in a wide range of countries or regions that supply the UK seafood market, as well as domestic landings; wild caught and farmed species; different sectors of the supply chain; and all aspects of unethical practice.

The outputs from this project include a fully-referenced literature review, 15 risk mapping ethical profiles highlighting countries and regions that import seafood to the UK, and an analytical report with strategic recommendations. All of these can be downloaded below.

The information generated by this project has been included within the resources captured by Tools for Ethical Seafood Sourcing and will feed into the development of the second phase of the Seafish Risk Assessment for Sourcing Seafood, and into the ongoing development of the Responsible Fishing Scheme. There will also be strategic outputs which will help guide future Seafish activities in this area.
