Publication: 2006 Economic Survey of the UK Fishing Fleet
Author: John Anderson, Hazel Curtis, Anne-Margaret Stewart, Hazel McShane Date: July 2008 Summary: The 2006 economic survey of the UK fishing fleet is the most recent nationwide costs and earnings survey of the sector and continues to build upon the work carried out by the Seafish Economics team in 2005. This study presents the latest economic information on up to 35 segments of the commercially active UK fishing fleet. Survey results suggest that despite increases in vessel earnings across a number of segments, rising operating costs and reduced fishing opportunities meant that achieving profitability was still a major challenge for most of the UK fishing fleet in 2006. Publication: Seafish Economics Key Features: West of Scotland nephrops fishery - Review of issues facing the industry
Author: H C Curtis, S M Anton Date: December 2006 Summary: During a review of sector performance, the West of Four Fisheries Management Group (WOFFMG) identified issues adversely affecting the profitability of dependent vessel businesses and the sustainability of the nephrops stock in the west of Scotland area. In order to solve the problems effectively, industry representatives and Highland Council officials agreed that they should seek assistance from the Scottish Executive to tackle the issues in a structured way. Their first priorities were to gain a better understanding of the causes and implications of the issues, and to obtain fishermen’s views on possible solutions. Seafish research conducted in the first half of 2006 showed the scale and scope of these issues, recorded the views of fishermen on some possible solutions, and the study report recommends next steps to identifying agreed solutions. Publication: SW Beam Trawl Financial Performance_2005 Mid Year Review
Author: Seafish Economics Date: July 2005 Summary: In recent years structural changes have taken place in the beam trawl fishing segment, leaving fewer beam trawl vessels in operation. Gross earnings are expected to be better this year than in 2004 due to higher quotas of key species, increasing awareness of quality issues and stable fish prices. Net profits are expected to be lower than 2004, mainly due to the large increase in the cost of fuel over the last 12 months. Fuel costs are seen as the main problem in this segment, and could potentially lead to vessel tie-ups. Key issues include calls for higher quota of monkfish, megrim, and area VII sole, and the removal of effort restrictions on non-pressure stocks. Publication: Economic Model: Dredge Mussels, King Scallops, Manila Clams, Native Clams, Oysters, Suspended Mussels
Author: Not known Date: 2001 Summary: This is a suite of six CDs, each with guidance notes. Each CD consists of an interactive electronic model that is intended to provide assistance in assessing the worth of a shellfish cultivation plan of a particular species. The models are planned to be incorporated in a “Seafish Hyperbook” which will contain much background information on the technology and nomenclature of each species’ cultivation in a multi-media format. The models are planning guides that each provide various economic indicators and outputs, and can be used repeatedly for different scenarios, allowing rapid “what-if” calculations. Each model consists administration costs; other operating costs; expected net selling price; harvest shortfall component; and financing means. The overall outcome (i.e. increasing or decreasing cash balance) is then calculated with figures given of profits/losses in each of the first six years of operation. The user may then choose to adjust his model inputs so as to study their effect on the outcome, or else access a variety of spreadsheet information relating to business economics, including profit/(loss) projection, discounted cash flow projection (with Internal Rate of Return (IRR)), a balance sheet, and the financial ratios as applied in year 7 at full production. A sensitivity analysis can also be called upon to cover a range of percentage variations of certain model variables, with consequent outcome on IRR. Each CD also includes on it a set of guidance notes for using the model; a paper copy of these notes accompanies each CD. Format: CD Price: £265

Publication: Consumer Attitudes towards Farmed Seafood
Author: T. Gross Date: 2001 Summary: Research findings on consumers’ attitudes towards farmed seafood are summarised in this booklet. Two aspects of the retail market for seafood were examined: what are consumers’ attitudes towards the labelling of farmed seafood – can the use of alternative product descriptors influence their attitudes? If so, which terms produce the most positive reactions? Also, how do consumers react to the concept of organic seafood. What is their understanding of it? Would they consider buying it? Publication: Consumer Attitudes towards Health and Food Safety
Author: T. Gross Date: 2001 Summary: General awareness of health-related issues in food has risen significantly. One possible consequence of this has been new trends in the retail market (of which the explosion in organic foods would be a prime example). Beyond the main competitive advantage of seafood in being perceived as “healthy”, there is relatively little knowledge about consumer attitudes towards health and safety as regards food and how this relates to seafood. The research reported here aims to provide the detail needed to fully grasp how people think, and act, when it comes to health and food safety. Publication: The Possiblities of Labelling Fish by its Region of Origin
Author: E. Fossey Date: 1999 Summary: This report is a response to speculation shown in the industry regarding consumer reaction to the ability to identify fish by its area of origin within Britain, and whether, and to what degree, consumers would favour fish landed locally as opposed to non-local fish.
