Surveys and data

Seafish is responsible for the collection of economic data relating to the UK seafood industry, including fishing fleet and processing statistics.

Commission Regulation 665/2008 establishes the Data Collection Framework (DCF), a community framework for the collection, management and use of data in the fisheries sector and support for scientific advice regarding the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

Under this regulation, the European Commission requires Member States to collect data on biological and economic aspects of many European fisheries and relate fisheries sectors. In doing so, it seeks to provide scientists and others responsible for the management of fisheries with the information they need.

The DCF specifies the collective data that are required for the EU as a whole, as well as setting out targets for the precision of data within three different areas. Seafish is responsible for the collection of economic data for the UK fishing fleet and the UK seafood processing sector.

Working together with the national correspondent, based in the Statistics and Analysis Team of the Marine Management Organisation our team contributes to the various elements of the Data Collection Framework (DCF), including to the UK's national programme proposals, technical reports and provision of financial information.

More about our data collection activities can be found on this page about our fishing fleet survey and this page about our survey of the fish processing sector.
