Catches of sardine have been relatively stable since 2000, with an increasing trend in Divisions VIIIa,b,d (Bay of Biscay) and a decreasing trend in Subarea VII (English Channel and Celtic Seas) in recent years. The combined stock size indicator index for Divisions VIIIa,b,d, shows an increasing trend over the last five years.  Current harvest rate is close to the long-term mean and is likely to be close to Fmsy.

Stock structure and recruitment

Sardine in Celtic Seas (VIIa, b, c, f, g, j, k), English Channel (VIId, e, h) and Bay of Biscay (VIIIa, b, d) are considered part of the same management unit However, there is uncertainty about how much mixing occurs between areas. Some movement of fish between Divisions VIIIb and VIIIc is known to occur.


Indications of Recruitment, age 1 from the PELGAS survey in Divisions VIIIa, b, d, show that 2013 and 2015 recruitments are the highest in the time-series (Figure 1. bottom right panel). There is currently no biomass or recruitment information for Subarea VII.


Data gaps and research priorities

Only catch and few effort data are available for sardine in Subarea VII. There is no biological sampling of sardine catch in the Celtic Sea and very little biological sampling in the English Channel. Consequently catch-at-age/length data are not available for Subarea VII.  Also, there is no consistent time-series of survey estimates of abundance for sardine in Subarea VII.  Although some sardines are caught during various demersal surveys carried out in the Celtic Seas, Bay of Biscay and English Channel on an annual basis, these catches cannot be used to derive reliable abundance indices.  The lack of catch composition and survey information in the Celtic seas and the English Channel impairs the possibility of performing an analytical assessment for the whole area.
