GMDSS Long Range Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate

A. Corcoran

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is a new communications system for distress, safety and communications at sea. This system came into being in 1992 and is being implemented in stages. Full implementation will be achieved by February 1999. It may be used by any suitably equipped vessel and is designed to rapidly alert search and rescue authorities and other vessels of a distress situation so that help may be obtained with minimum delay.
