Guidelines to develop a new fishery

The development of a new fishery represents a major investment in time and money for fishermen.

Often there are a number of operational, statutory and, increasingly, environmental issues to be addressed before fishermen are able to make an informed decision to commit to a major investment.

Seafish has produced environmental best practice guidelines based on a process of information gathering and using an investigation into a potential razor clam fishery off the North West coast of England as a case study.

The guidelines describe the process referring to the North West razor clam fishery investigation in a step-by-step manner in order that they can be adopted by fishermen and operators wishing to develop new fisheries in other sectors.
