Commission to study live fish transport

11 January 2012

The European Commission has published  a Report on the impact of Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport. While the report is mostly concerned with the welfare of farm animals, it notes that the legal framework needs to be improved for the transport of farmed fish. The report states that the Commission will carry out a study on the welfare of fish during transport "to receive an overview of the current situation regarding the welfare of fish during transport, with a view to identifying and addressing possible shortcomings of the EU legal framework in this context, in accordance with the commitments undertaken under the Commission Aquaculture Strategy."
