Certification for processors and wholesalers

There are numerous schemes that recognise the highest standards in seafood production and wholesaling. These include SALSA (Safe and Local Supplier Approval) and BRC (British Retail Consortium) certification.

SALSA is a food safety certification scheme for small and micro sized producers. It was launched in 2007 and is a joint venture between the National Farmers Union, the Food and Drink Federation, the British Hospitality Association and the British Retail Consortium. For further information about the SALSA scheme, please visit the SALSA website.

The BRC Global Food Safety Standard is a condition of supply requested by multiple retailers, who are also starting to recognise the SALSA scheme for small local suppliers who are not able to achieve BRC certification. For more information about BRC standards, please visit the BRC website.

Seafish is currently able to offer funding support towards the cost of mentoring to businesses wishing to achieve SALSA or BRC certification for the first time. Seafish is also currently able to provide funding support towards the cost of BRC Auditor Training courses.

Businesses who have received support from Seafish include Haymans Fishmarket in Oxford,  J Charles in Aberdeen and Lunar Filleting in Peterhead. Seafish has also produced a report which measures the value of it's support for BRC and SALSA certification. To read the report, please click here.
